Suggestions for watering pots on a deck?

Greetings from Chicago in the dead of winter. All of my stuff is frozen outside, but I’m trying to get ready for spring! I currently have Rainpoint setup in my backyard to water the flowers and plants and it works great, especially the soil monitor! I have one for the front but I need to redo it as a squirrel ate through my soaker hose last year. The one I haven’t figured out is my deck. I bring out a bunch of our indoor plants outside and if I don’t water them almost every day in the summer they don’t do very well. Any suggestions on a setup to use on a deck with a bunch of different plants about 10-15 different sized pots? I included a picture for how they “were” setup last year. Thanks all!

Squirrels are the worst — maybe wrap the lines with something chew-resistant :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

When going on vacation I’ve tried a wide variety of hacks to keep my plants alive but this is messy. Also I can be lazy and forget about my plants and they suffer, so I’m happy to pass this job off to automation.

Nice pot arrangement! Really like how they’re grouped together in the photo. Looking forward to your spring setup.

Which system is that? Drippers? Does it water evenly? I’ve only used the sprayers.

It’s the RainPoint indoor drip irrigation kit (I got it from their official store on Amazon). Yeah, it uses drip emitters, not sprayers.

In my experience, it waters very evenly — each emitter puts out the same flow, so every plant gets the same amount as long as the tubing is laid flat. Much better than sprayers for pots since it soaks straight into the soil without splashing.

A few real-use notes:

Comes with 10 emitters (enough for about 10 pots unless you double up like I did on bigger ones)

Has a “water & soak” mode that pauses between cycles so water absorbs better

You can schedule it or water on demand, though the on-demand button combo is a little fussy

Tubing had a smell at first but faded after a day outside

So far it’s kept all my plants evenly hydrated without over or under-watering any. If you’re thinking about switching from sprayers to drippers for pots, I’d say it’s worth trying.

Get rid of the squirrels by putting mouse trap upside down. It won’t hurt them but if they step on the trap, it will trigger it and scare the hell out of your squirrels. If you happens to see when they step on it, you will see the squirrels jump about 5 feet and run away without being hurt. :joy:

The teeth of mice are really powerful. They even broke my head drawer.
