We live in Southern Oregon so it doesn’t get too cold really, but I’m curious what other people do to winterize their systems. If it was small enough you could just pull it up every winter. But I dig so much of mine in and I’d hate to pull it all out. I do put away the controllers but that’s pretty much it. Do people force the water out somehow with compressed air?
Or just let it drip out, hope it has space to expand and then do repairs in the spring?
Hey! Oregon “mild but unpredictable” winters, right? You’re on point with storing controllers. For buried lines, using compressed air to evacuate water is your best bet. It’s way easier than digging everything up and ensures no trapped water freezes and cracks the tubing. Some local garden centers offer this as a service if you don’t have a compressor. Happy winterizing!
I’ve seen bags that are stable enough to be placed over the controller during winter. Has anyone tried this? I don’t have much confidence in this method because the controller doesn’t generate temperature. The bag remains cold inside. If there is water, it will still freeze.
