Pic 1: sad, patchy, bare spots everywhere.
Pic 2: finally looking like something I don’t hate
Here’s what actually helped:
• Loosened up the soil in bare spots first (just raked it good)
• Mixed in a little compost before seeding
• Used decent quality grass seed, not the cheapest bag
• Kept it consistently damp — not soaked, just moist
• Was patient. Took a few weeks before anything really showed
The biggest lesson? Prep work matters. And watering consistently beats flooding it once a week.
Anyone else working on their lawn this spring? What’s your go-to method?
Huge difference! Pic 2 is looking solid. The compost + consistent watering combo really does the trick — I learned that the hard way too after years of just throwing seed down and hoping for the best
Raking before seeding was my “wait I’m supposed to do that?” moment. Game changer.
Still working on a few bare spots here but getting there. Nice work!
Pic 2 is goals honestly That’s exactly what I’m hoping mine looks like by summer.
The “kept it consistently damp” part is where I always mess up. Either I forget or I overcompensate and drown them. Might need to try the compost trick this year — haven’t done that before.
Did you have to deal with any birds digging up the seeds? That’s my other struggle
