Weekend Project: Building a Garden Bed

Finally got around to building a new garden bed this weekend. Nothing fancy, just a simple wooden frame to keep things organized.

Went with Meranti wood β€” treated it myself with wood wax oil before assembly. Should hold up decently. Used stainless screws to put it together, took about an hour. Dimensions are roughly 4m x 1.2m, good size for the space I had.

Next step is figuring out irrigation and what to plant first. Thinking maybe tomatoes and some herbs. Anyone have layout suggestions for a bed this size? Also open to trellis ideas if you’ve built one that worked well.

Nice build! 4m x 1.2m is a solid size β€” plenty of room to play with. For layout, I’d say run the bed north-south if possible, helps with sun exposure. Trellis on the north end works great for tomatoes or beans so they don’t shade out everything else. Also, with that length, you could split it into sections β€” maybe trellised crops on one end, lower herbs on the other. Did you end up deciding what’s going in first?

So cool! I’m starting to look forward to it being covered with flowers. Have you treated this wood with any preservative? I used some thin board flower boxes and applied cement on the outside. However, they broke within less than two months.

Nice build! 4m x 1.2m is a great size. Curious what made you go with camphor wood for this β€” looks solid!
